Navigating Graduate Funding: Key Insights from Our “Greet and Meet” with Dr. Daniela Mainardi

Following our successful “Greet and Meet” on September 5, 2025, featuring Dr. Daniela Mainardi, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, the Graduate Student Council (GSC) wanted to share a summary of the vital information discussed. The session was incredibly insightful, covering everything from securing financial aid to understanding the role of the GSC.

For those who couldn’t attend or anyone needing a refresher, here are the key takeaways.

Demystifying Graduate Financial Aid & Scholarships

Navigating the world of graduate funding can be complex. Dr. Mainardi provided clarity on the various forms of support available at Louisiana Tech and the responsibilities that come with them.

1. Types of Financial Support The most common forms of financial aid for graduate students are assistantships, which provide both a monthly stipend and often a tuition waiver.

  • Teaching Assistantship (TA): As a TA, you assist with teaching duties, which may include grading, leading labs or discussion sections, or instructing undergraduate courses.
  • Research Assistantship (RA): As an RA, you work directly with a faculty member on their research projects, contributing to data collection, analysis, experimentation, and publications.

2. The Importance of Tuition Waivers A significant part of any funding package is the tuition waiver. This can cover all or a portion of your tuition costs. For students from outside Louisiana, securing an out-of-state tuition waiver is particularly crucial, as it reduces tuition costs to the in-state rate, making your education significantly more affordable. These waivers are typically tied to a TA or RA position.

3. How to Secure Funding While some funding is offered upon admission, many opportunities require you to be proactive. It is highly recommended to reach out to the graduate coordinator in your department and directly contact professors whose research interests align with yours to inquire about available RA positions.

4. How to Keep Your Funding Receiving a scholarship or assistantship is just the first step; maintaining it is essential. Eligibility is almost always conditional. To continue your funding, you must:

  • Maintain a Strong GPA: Most departments require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Falling below this threshold can put your funding in jeopardy.
  • Make Satisfactory Academic Progress: You must be consistently moving forward in your degree program, meeting milestones as outlined by your department.
  • Fulfill Your TA/RA Duties: Your performance as a TA or RA is regularly evaluated. A failure to meet the expectations of your role can lead to the termination of your assistantship.
  • Stay Enrolled: You are typically required to be registered for a minimum number of graduate credit hours each semester to remain eligible for financial aid.

You can lose your financial support if you fail to meet any of these conditions. Always stay in clear communication with your academic advisor and the graduate coordinator to ensure you remain in good standing.

Your Voice on Campus: An Introduction to the GSC

A key part of the event was also introducing the role of the Graduate Student Council (GSC). So, who are we and what do we do?

The GSC is the official student government body representing and advocating for the entire graduate student population at Louisiana Tech. Our mission is to enhance the graduate student experience through advocacy, community-building, and professional development.

How the GSC Works:

  • Representation: We act as the primary liaison between graduate students and the university administration, voicing your concerns and suggestions on academic, financial, and student-life issues.
  • Events & Workshops: We organize a variety of events throughout the year, from social mixers and networking nights to professional development workshops that help you succeed in your academic and professional careers.
  • Support & Resources: We serve as a central hub of information, connecting you with campus resources and providing a support system to help you navigate the challenges of graduate school.

We encourage you to get involved! Attend our meetings, participate in our events, and never hesitate to reach out to us with your ideas or concerns.

The GSC is committed to your success. A huge thank you to Dr. Mainardi for sharing her time and expertise with us. Stay tuned to our website and social media for more events like this!
